In the ten days or so that I have been in Penang, I have eaten my share of good food. Unfortunately, there are also some not so good food. Here are some of them.
The first one is the Coconut tart we bought from a bakery in Cintra Street. Coconut tarts are supposed to be a heaping of moist coconut, sweetened with condensed milk, baked into a thin pie crust, and covered by a thin crust.
The version we bought yesterday has crusts that are almost a third of an inch thick. There was no top crust. Instead, some funky yellow dough was wound around in a circular pattern on top. As to the coconut center, it is all center and no coconut. What is in place appears to be some sugary glue, with nary a hint of coconut. The taste of this tart is all sweet, no coconut flavor. Why they even call it a coconut tart is a mystery to me. This has to be one of the worst thing I have eaten since coming to Penang.
The same bakery that sold us the forgettable coconut tart also sold us the "Heung Pan" or fragrant cookies. These cookies come in two varieties: white or dark sugar. The one we purchased is the dark sugar variant. The first objection I have is the dough. it is too doughy. The walls are too thick, and not flaky enough. The main objection I have about this cookie is that the sugary center is not the usual gooey kind. It is supposed to be slightly pliable, gooey. What we get, apparently, is some dried up brown sugar. No no no, it is supposed to be more like molasses. The place that does this well is a bakery near Sui Fun's office, the Ngee Heung store. I shall get some during the week, for research purposes only, mind you.
The next bad food I had is the twin-fried dough. It looks good enough, and taste okay enough, but you can tell the oil used to fry the dough is old. In fact, it is going rancid. They should change the oil more frequently.
Hilarious!!
